Eastern Idaho was stunned last Thursday morning when two children and an adult were injured in a shooting at Rigby Middle School.
The Post Register reported that Jefferson County Sheriff Steve Anderson described the shooter as a sixth-grade girl who attended the school but lives in Idaho Falls. Anderson said the shooter drew a gun from a backpack and shot three people before being stopped by a teacher.
âWeâre definitely having a lot of conversations about the shooting and about safety,â said Teton School District 401 superintendent Monte Woolstenhulme on Friday. âItâs a tragic situation but it was a real blessing that the injuries werenât more severe and the staff intervened so quickly to keep the students safe.â
The Teton School District 401 Board of Trustees voted on May 10 to make masks optional at all schools for the remainder of the academic year, effective May 11.Â
Superintendent Monte Woolstenhulme introduced the idea because Teton County has seen a steady decline in its active Covid case rate over the past months, and because all adults and teens 16 and older can now easily get the vaccine. On May 10, U.S. regulators approved the Pfizer shot for children as young as 12.  The numbers show we should be backing off of what we are requiring people to do, Woolstenhulme said. The data proves that. Â
TSD 401 modifies current mask requirements, adopts opening plan for next school year
DRIGGS, Idaho (KIFI) - At its regular monthly meeting Monday, the Teton School District 401 Board of Trustees voted to make masks optional for students and teachers for the remainder of the 20-21 school year, effective Tuesday.
Principals disseminated the information by email and video to their staffs and families, asking all to be respectful. Those who choose to continue to wear masks will be supported in their choice, as will those who opt to not wear them.
The board also discussed and approved the plan regarding reopening of schools in the fall. Based on the district’s school-based decision-making model, in place since December, the plan calls for in-person learning unless a state-mandated stay-at-home order is in effect. If the virus were to re-escalate, the plan provides the ability to make adjustments at the building level based on the level of risk.
