State DOT officials plan on spending more than $10 million on repaving a highway bridge in Dubuque that connects to Wisconsin. The project is one of several recently outlined in the Iowa Department of Transportation’s draft five-year improvement plan for 2022 through 2026. The plan also includes the replacement of multiple major highway bridges in Dubuque County and a $25.8 million project to repave a two-mile causeway that connects the island of Sabula to the nearby bridge to Savanna, Ill. The plan is divided into fiscal years, which begin on July 1 of each year.

Dubuque officials are looking to spend close to $500,000 to renovate one of the city’s older fire stations. The Dubuque City Council recently voted to set a public hearing for the approval of the Fire Station No. 6 external stairwell addition project, estimated to cost over $462,000. Dubuque Fire Station No. 6 on Rhomberg Avenue was originally constructed in 1905. Fire Chief Rick Steines said the station is geographically important for providing quick response capabilities to many properties in Dubuque’s North End and Point areas. Over time, the station has dealt with water damage, which has rotted several wooden sections of the structure. If a project is approved, city officials intend to award a contract to a bidder on June 21st, with an estimated completion date of Dec. 31, 2021.
