Cape Coral business owner sets up community fridge to help the hungry

“People in the area, they’ve struggled because of the economic changes related to COVID, the isolation, even some of the food supply,” said Vann Ellison, president and CEO of St. Matthew’s House. “Everybody can make a difference.” Lopez said she plans to keep the fridge for as long as she can even after the holidays. “Anybody can come and eat, we don’t want anybody to be hungry,” said Lopez. “We’ve been fortunate enough to have food on our table, we want to make sure everybody else does too.” If you’d like to donate, you can drop off your non-perishables at Lee County Plumbing and Supply at 532 SE 47th Terrace in Cape Coral.

The small business owner wants to make it easier for people to have food on the table during the holidays. Last week she sparked an idea. Lopez, who owns Lee County Plumbing Supply in Cape Coral, purchased a fridge and placed it outside of her business, packing it with food. “We saw all the long lines for Harry Chapin and so on and so forth and we said how can we do it,” Lopez said. “We’re like, hey, let’s put a fridge outside. We can put food in it and people can come and get what they want or people can leave what they want.”
