Portland police identify officer who fatally shot man in Lents Park

Delong is an East Precinct officer who has worked for the bureau for eight years, police said. He shot the man after the man drew what appeared to be a firearm, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the investigation.
The man died at the scene. Authorities have not publicly identified him.
Police had received multiple calls about the man in the park with a gun shortly after 9:30 a.m. Friday. They confronted the man and fired less-lethal, 40-millimeter munitions at him before the fatal shooting.

Portland leaders hope sweeping $6 million plan stems historic shooting surge

Portland’s mayor and commissioners Wednesday unanimously approved a $6 million plan they say is the best option to combat a dramatic rise in shootings and gun deaths that’s placed the city on track for a record number of homicides.
It also provides millions of new dollars to community organizations for anti-violence work and authorizes the addition of two dozen unarmed rangers to patrol parks and surrounding neighborhoods.
“The work in front of us is that of building a community safety system,” said Commissioner Dan Ryan before casting his vote in favor of the proposal he helped spearhead. “Now is the time to take some big steps and to be bold.”

Portland’s mayor and city commissioners said late Tuesday they reached a deal on a set of proposals aimed to stem a dramatic rise of shootings and gun deaths over the last year and will vote unanimously to approve them on Wednesday.
Given the late timing of the maneuver, members of the public will not be able to speak in favor or against the package during Wednesday’s council meeting but can submit written testimony beforehand. If it indeed garners all five council members’ votes, it would take effect immediately.
