Fortress Apple: Metallic fencing shields reopened downtown Portland store

An imposing fence surrounding the Apple store in downtown Portland is not a permanent fixture but could remain in place through mid-April, according to the company and city officials.
The tall metallic barrier appeared suddenly last week as boards covering the building came down and the store reopened for the first time since late May.
Its presence has prompted comparisons to a prison entrance or military checkpoint in a desolate city center still reeling from the coronavirus pandemic, months of racial justice protests and occasional rioting.
It is also reminiscent of the barriers placed outside the Multnomah County Justice Center and Mark O. Hatfield U.S. Courthouse as demonstrators clashed nightly with police for most of last summer.

Portlanders are likely to see their water and sewage costs rise by nearly 5% this year, even as the coronavirus pandemic continues to squeeze families financially, according to plans released by city officials.
The combined monthly bill for both in a typical city household would increase to about $129 starting in July, up from about $123 the previous fiscal year, budget documents reviewed by The Oregonian/OregonLive show.
The proposed annual hike just shy of $72 comes as many Portlanders struggle to pay for basic utilities, Commissioner Mingus Mapps said.

A Portland man is fighting for his life after he was stabbed multiple times during an altercation at a Laurelhurst Park homeless encampment, according to police, witnesses and his family.
Three assailants left Christopher Lee Hopson, 33, with wounds to his neck and chest and the sound of gunfire ringing in the air in the wee hours of Thursday morning, police and witnesses said.
Hopson was rushed to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, his family said.
“They didn’t think he was going to make it,” his mother Barbara Hopson told The Oregonian/OregonLive on Friday.
Cary Randall Cadonau was named as the person authorities believe accosted the mayor as he left a Southwest Portland pub Sunday night, according to an updated police report released Tuesday.
