TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Pittsburgh beat No. 24 Florida State 1-0 Friday night in a classic pitchers’ duel at Dick Howser Stadium. Parker Messick struck out a career-high nine batters, but FSU hitters could not find the timely hit throughout the night as Pitt improved to 4-1 on the season.
FSU fell to 2-2 on the year. It was the ACC opener for both teams.
Messick (0-2) struck out nine batters in five innings, but two doubles to Ron Washington and Bryce Hulett in the fourth inning provided all the scoring that Pitt would need. The Florida State bullpen was stellar as well Friday, combining to allow just four baserunners (two hits, two walks) in four innings.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State (2-1) swept both ends of a doubleheader Sunday, beating North Florida (1-2) 14-7 and 8-4 Sunday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles hit three home runs on the day, including the second in as many days for Mat Nelson and the first of Vince Smith’s career.
Reese Albert hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning of game one, giving the Noles a 3-2 lead that they held the rest of the day.
On the mound, freshman Carson Montgomery made his Seminole debut, pitching four innings without allowing an earned run. Bryce Hubbart (1-0) won the opener, throwing 1.1 innings in relief of Montgomery.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – For the first time in 345 days, Florida State baseball will take the field in a competitive game when the Noles host North Florida to open the 2021 season. Redshirt freshman pitcher Parker Messick will start for the Seminoles on Opening Day, followed by freshman Carson Montgomery and redshirt junior Conor Grady for Sunday’s doubleheader. As part of Saturday’s Opening Day festivities, former head coach Mike Martin will have his jersey retired in the second inning. Number 11, which Martin wore for 46 years as a player and coach at Florida State, will be retired next to Dick Howser’s No. 34 and J.D. Drew’s No. 39 in left-centerfield. On the field, Martin’s legacy will be continued with senior pitcher Chase Haney wearing No. 11 for the 2021 season. Florida State is 9-2 all-time against North Florida in a series that only dates back to 2006. The teams were scheduled to open the season Friday before inclement weather was anticipated in Tallahassee. All three
