⚾: FSU Hosts No. 18 Cavaliers

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State (2-4, 0-3 ACC) looks to break into the win column in Atlantic Coast Conference play when No. 18 Virginia (5-3, 1-2 ACC) comes to Tallahassee for three games at Dick Howser Stadium. All three games will stream live on ACC Network Extra.

Second-year freshman pitcher Bryce Hubbart will make his first career weekend start on Saturday. The left-hander pitched a career-high 4.1 innings in relief Sunday against Pitt, striking out a career-high nine batters.

Messick, FSU’s Friday night starter, also struck out a career-high nine batters a week ago against the Panthers.

Offensively, outfielder Elijah Cabell made his season debut against the Panthers, tying a career-high with two hits in games two and three of the series. On Sunday, Cabell hit his first home run of the season, a mammoth 489-foot home run that left the ballpark at 115 miles per hour.

Catcher Mat Nelson and first baseman Tyler Martin, who has also spent time at designated hitter, have been declared game-time decisions by head coach Mike Martin, Jr. Martin leads Florida State in hitting with a .467 average, while Nelson is second on the team with a .300 average and has three of FSU’s six home runs on the season. Behind the plate, Nelson has also thrown out two of three would-be basestealers this year.

The Seminoles and Cavaliers last played in 2019, when Florida State won two of three games in Charlottesville.

Virginia comes into the game having won two straight games. The Cavaliers dropped the first two games of ACC play against North Carolina, but rebounded to win the series finale and then beat George Washington 11-1 on Tuesday. Florida State’s midweek game against Mercer was postponed due to bad weather in Tallahassee.
