Champaign Co executive addresses dog mistakenly put down; online policies appear to not match official statements

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) – The Champaign County Executive is taking responsibility and admitting fault after a family pet was mistakenly put down but providing few details to WAND News about what happened, why or how it will be prevented in the future. The owner of the dog, Monica Lopez, said her dog, Dada, got loose on Friday, Dec. 18, before someone turned the pet in to animal control. Lopez said she had tried to reach animal control after searching everywhere and was told they did not have a dog matching Dada s description.  Lopez called animal control again on December 23, 2020 and, upon reviewing a picture of the dog sent by cell phone, officials confirmed to Lopez that Dada was with animal control. Despite being told Dada was safe, and warm and would be held until Dec. 28, Dada was put down on Christmas Eve.

Dispute over filling county board vacancy continuing even after swearing-in

URBANA — A day after she tried twice to block the Champaign County Board from filling a vacant seat, county Executive Darlene Kloeppel said Friday that she was preparing a written veto of the board’s vote to approve its newest member, Cameron Raab of Champaign. Kloeppel said she told the board Thursday evening that she was vetoing its unanimous vote approving Raab to fill the District 6 seat vacated by Mike Ingram, who resigned after being elected recorder of deeds in November. Kloeppel’s oral veto was ultimately ignored. State’s Attorney Julia Rietz warned Kloeppel that her action could be viewed as contemptuous of a court order issued earlier in the day. County Clerk Aaron Ammons swore Raab in, and he was seated for the Thursday night board meeting.

Champaign County executive loses bid to block board s action on District 6 vacancy

URBANA — A Champaign County judge has denied a temporary restraining order sought by County Executive Darlene Kloeppel, who was seeking to block the county board from filling a board vacancy Thursday evening. In an emergency telephone hearing Thursday, Judge Jason Bohm denied Kloeppel’s request, saying she wouldn’t be irreparably harmed without a temporary restraining order. Kloeppel sued the county board in June, contending she has the authority to fill vacancies in elected county offices rather than the board chairman. In either case, an appointment to fill a vacancy is subject to a county board vote. County board Chairman Kyle Patterson scheduled a special meeting for Thursday, ahead of the regular county board meeting, to fill the unexpired District 6 seat of Mike Ingram, who resigned after being elected as recorder of deeds.
