Danville budget has no rate, tax increases

DANVILLE, Va. — City Manager Ken Larking presented the proposed Fiscal Year 2021-2022 budget, which includes no proposed tax increases, no rate increases, no use of the fund balance and several areas for investment, to Danville City Council in a work session Tuesday evening. “We want to invest in Danville,” Larking said during the meeting. “We want to invest in our neighborhoods and people. We want to create a great home for our community, and this is how we do that.” Danville’s budget for next year is an expected $114.7 million dollars. Major revenue increases include $410,000 in additional delinquent and current real estate taxes, more than $130,000 in additional personal property taxes and nearly $1 million in additional sales taxes. However, they are also looking at a just over $250,000 reduction in hotel tax revenue, which Larking said is COVID related.

County supervisors agree on yearly budget, hear solar tax options

CHATHAM, Va. — The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors Finance Committee yesterday afternoon approved advertisement of the county budget for the fiscal year 2021-22. The board also heard updates on solar farm taxation options and 2022 property reassessment. County Administrator David Smitherman presented a budget of over $211 million for FY 2021-22, of which $71.5 million comprises the general fund. The remainder is state and federal funds, amalgamating to an annual county budget totaling $26 million more than last year. The budget proposal isn’t perfect, but, It s our attempt to get us through one more year, Smitherman said. Four years ago, the board engendered a four-year live within our means plan, Smitherman said. The plan helped the county bounce back from a historic low point in 2018, when county administrators were worried if they d be able to pay their own employees. Debt has diminished ever since.
