Fall River COVID stats decline — but vaccine rates behind other cities

FALL RIVER  The city’s COVID statistics indicated a continued decline this week, as Fall River slowly recovers from a surge of coronavirus cases in late March and vaccination numbers grow.  City health officials said 154 more residents tested positive for the highly infectious coronavirus in the past week, and four more people in Fall River died from it.   Since the city saw its first case of COVID in March 2020, 13,666 people have been diagnosed with the illness about three out of every 20 people in the city have had COVID at some time in the past year.   The COVID pandemic is responsible for 364 deaths so far. Of all the city’s COVID cases so far, about one out of every 37 has been fatal.

Fall River weekly COVID update

Dan Medeiros and Kristina Fontes The Herald News FALL RIVER Somerset, Swansea and Westport all took a step backward this week in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.   The three towns, which had been classified as moderate-risk for COVID for the past six weeks, returned to the high-risk red zone in the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s latest weekly risk update.   For towns of their size, being at moderate risk means either having 10 or more average daily cases per 100,000 in population, or a positive COVID test rate of 5% or higher. High-risk means both of those conditions are true.   This week, Somerset rose from a 3.91% COVID positive test rate to 5.18%; Swansea rose from 3.93% to 5.00%; and Westport increased from 4.87% to 5.88%.
