January topped 3,000 new cases of COVID in Fall River on Thursday, according to city health officials and the mayor’s office, while a report from the state revealed high numbers of cases among school staffers.
Since the first cases of COVID were reported in Fall River 10 months ago, Fall River has seen 11,071 people sickened by the highly infectious coronavirus. Statistically, about one out of every eight people citywide has tested positive at one point.
Another Fall River resident died of the illness on Thursday, bringing the city’s total number of deaths to 284 since the start of the pandemic.
January has been one of the worst months of the pandemic second-worst in terms of new cases, at 3,033, just behind December, and third-worst in terms of COVID deaths. This month, about 59 deaths have been attributed to COVID, just behind December at 61 and June at 68.
