FALL RIVER Another 98 cases of COVID were reported on Wednesday, according to city health officials, and two more people died of the disease.
Since the first cases of COVID were reported in Fall River in March, 11,554 people have been sickened by the highly infectious coronavirus. About one in every eight people in the city has tested positive for COVID at some point.
The illness has killed 291 people in Fall River to date.
With Wednesday’s addition of two deaths, 66 people have died of COVID this year an average of about two deaths every day.
The city has been dealing with a second COVID wave, with average cases beginning to climb around late October. After record-high cases in early January, the city’s numbers have been apparently beginning to decline in what may be a sign that the second wave is starting to recede.
FALL RIVER January saw more new cases of COVID-19 in Fall River than any other month of the pandemic so far but average daily cases are still lower than a month ago and trending downward, a probable sign that the second wave of coronavirus cases has peaked or is at least leveling off.
On Tuesday, city health officials said that since the first cases of COVID were reported in March, the illness has sickened 11,456 people citywide. About one in every eight people in Fall River has had COVID at some point.
An estimated 1,679 people currently have the highly infectious coronavirus.
