Central Ohio Authorities Seek Public s Help Identifying Reckless ATV Riders

Authorities say the multi-jurisdictional task force deployed to address the reckless operation of ATVs and dirt bikes in Columbus and Franklin County made 11 arrests, impounded 11 vehicles, and recovered five guns last weekend. In one instance Friday, investigators say an individual fleeing Columbus police grabbed and fought with a nearby Whitehall officer. After the officer used a taser, a gun fell out of the suspect s waistband. Officials later learned that the individual was a 14-year-old. There were no injuries, and the end result was the best possible outcome according to Whitehall Police Deputy Chief Dan Kelso.  Had that gun come out earlier and had he been able to grab that gun during the struggle, we might have had another juvenile shot, which is the absolute last thing that any police officer in Franklin County wants, Deputy Chief Kelso continued. Whitehall apartment shooting leaves two dead

Whitehall police said Tuesday that a shooting that left two men dead at an apartment complex is believed to have been a murder-suicide involving two residents who didn t get along.  Michael Haycook, 60, was found fatally shot inside one of the apartments in the small, approximately 10-unit apartment building on the 800 block of Bernhard Road, police said. The door to an apartment two doors away from Haycook s was barricaded. Officers were able to see through a window and saw 36-year-old Roderick Moon down on the floor. Once police gained entry, Moon was found dead from what Whitehall investigators say appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. There were two firearms found near him.

Trio of Whitehall officers help save man from waters of Big Walnut Creek ThisWeek group A man whom the Whitehall Division of Police was told possibly had jumped from a bridge on East Main Street was not easy to see when three officers converged on the area shortly after 9 p.m. Jan. 12. The three officers spread out under the bridge and along the banks of the Big Walnut Creek and found the 35-year-old man. Each took turns at keeping the man’s head supported and out of the below-freezing water amid rocks until Whitehall Division of Fire medics arrived and transported him to a local hospital, where he was admitted and remained several days.
