Canton s new Centennial Park damaged by skateboarders, bike stunts

CANTON  Stunt work performed by young people showing off their skateboarding skills has left the city s new Centennial Park riddled with nicks and scrapes. As a result, the city is moving to deter skateboard and BMX bike enthusiasts from demonstrating their skills. Centennial Park opened to the public Dec. 30, and so far this year, Canton police have been called to it seven times in response to issues involving skateboards, bicycles and scooters, police records show. On March 10, they were called to address vandalism. This is as a direct result of these large groups of mostly teens to early 20s coming in and causing minor damage to the plaza, said Donn Angus, city planner and project manager for the plaza. He can see them from his office throughout the day.

Centennial Plaza will open to the public Dec 30

CANTON  The construction fence around Centennial Plaza will come down Wednesday. That morning, the crew will be out there disassembling it, so by that afternoon, it will be open to everyone in the area, said Donn Angus, the city planning director.  Overall, Angus said, he s tickled with the final product. Canton broke ground in August 2019 on the $12.3 million plaza, primarily funded by city tax revenue along with a $1.5 million state grant and $2.5 million in private donations. Officials aimed for completion by the NFL Centennial Celebration in September but that was postponed to 2021 because of the pandemic. MKSK, a Columbus-based firm, designed the football-themed space, and Dunlop & Johnston Inc. was the general contractor. Members of Ironworkers Local 550, working with Selinsky Force and Barnhart Crane & Rigging, installed the approximately 80-foot tall stainless steel arches in September.
