Last week, thousands of small glistening orbs known as comb jellies washed up on the beaches of Orange County, an unusual event that thrilled marine scientists and laypeople alike.
“The whole beach was covered. It was crazy,” State Parks Officer Danielle Snyder told the Orange County Register. “I’ve worked on the beach for 30 years, I’ve never seen them before … it was definitely something rare.”
Translucent and roughly marble-sized, the comb jellies are also known as sea gooseberries, and they look and feel like little blobs of jellyfish despite only a loose taxonomic relation and no stinging ability.
