Man receives 15 years to life for November fatal screwdriver attack

View Comments NEWARK   A screwdriver attack in November left one man dead and his attacker headed to the state penitentiary to serve a sentence of 15 years to life. Zacharie A. Nelson, 33, of Florida and living in Perry County at the time of the attack, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Licking County Common Pleas Court to the murder of John Mason, 50, during the early morning hours of Nov. 18, on North Cedar Street. Licking County Common Pleas Court Judge Thomas Marcelain said the sentence is the only one available for the murder charge, and said the term is not subject to early judicial release. Nelson receives credit for the 257 days he s already served.

Pataskala OK s rezoning for large-style warehouse at Mink & Refugee

Council member Todd Barstow cast the lone dissenting vote against the rezoning. As earlier reported, TPA is proposing a 1.2 million square foot warehouse/distribution facility “and associated site improvements.” It was previously noted the TPA proposal aligns with the recommendation of the city s Comprehensive Plan and was recommended for approval by the Planning and Zoning Commission on Feb. 3, according to city documents. Council also held a first reading for a similar warehouse project – this one calling for two large-size distribution-style structures – to be constructed in the Broad Street and Etna Parkway area. As previously reported, South Carolina-based “Red Rock,” is proposing two, approximately million-square-feet buildings on land fronting Broad Street within Pataskala’s Joint Economic Development District (or JEDD), in the Pataskala Corporate Park.

Pataskala talks plowing, possible parking enforcement to help crews

Newark Advocate Recurring winter storms and icy temperatures and the toll they’re exacting on salt supplies, roads, and water lines were a topic of much Pataskala City Council discussion on Feb. 16. Council member Todd Barstow opened the discussions, praising Pataskala road crews for their clearance efforts. “Every-other-day, they are out there doing it,” Barstow said. He praised the results in comparison “to other jurisdictions I have to drive through.” However, the frequency with which crews are being forced out for plowing and salting raised some potential budget and salt supply concerns. Council member Andy Walther said, “I do agree the plowing and the salting have been really great. I wonder where we stand in the budget on salt and overtime projection… just to see where we’re at.
