Dagdi Chawl, the den of convicted gangster Arun Gawli alias Daddy, is all set to be redeveloped after Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (
MHADA) gave a letter of intent (LOI) for its redevelopment. Dagdi Chawl is a famous hideout that gave Gawli protection not only from his rivals,
Dawood Ibrahim and Amar Naik gangs, but also the police.
Gawli’s family that hails from Madhya Pradesh had settled in the Dagdi Chawl at Saat Rasta in Byculla.

Letter of Intent (LoI) for the redevelopment of the 10 chawls. We have issued them an LOI. Now the builder will get their plans sanctioned from BMC.
Then the eligibility of the tenants will be finalised and after that Mhada will issue an No Objection Certificate (NOC), said Arun Dongre, Chief Officer, Mhada s Mumbai Building Repairs & Redevelopment Board (MBRRB).

Mumbai: Now 65-year-old underworld gangster Arun Gawliâs life has been a roller coaster of sorts. The man famous as âDaddyâ in the underworld has seen hide inside boxes, climb up his bathroom window to escape raiding policemen, to providing residents of the infamous Dagdi Chawl a proper place to live which in turn ensured that he stayed safe within.
But Gawli wasnât the known gangster before the 80âs. His father Gulabrao had migrated to Mumbai from Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh in the early 1950s and settled at Dagdi Chawl. But abject poverty had made Gawli drop out of school while he was still in the fifth grade, and take up his familyâs traditional business of supplying milk around Saat Rasta in Mumbai.
