Algansee discusses how to spend pot of gold COVID-19 relief funds

The Daily Reporter “We’re coming into a pot of gold,” Algansee Township Supervisor Russ Jennings said to his board Monday.  Treasurer Sarah Strong said it is $193,033 from the recently passed COVID-19 Relief Act. That’s $99 per person, based on the 2019 census estimate.  Even though the township “hasn’t seen the money yet,” Jennings suggest they talk about how to spend it. “I’ll give you my thoughts. Mainly I’d like to see it spent for roads, she said. Former Trustee John Shilling had suggested asphalt in the cemeteries.  “I’d like to see some in this parking lot,” Jennings said of the township hall on South Ray-Quincy Road.

Coldwater Township objects to Road Commission charges

The Daily Reporter The Coldwater Township Board Monday declined to allocate more than $15,000 to repave 5.1 miles of its local roads this summer after Branch County Road Commission Manager Jay Miller informed them the proposed township share would be $22,542.  The dispute rekindles an old issue of whether townships must contribute at all to local road construction or maintenance under Michigan law.  Township Supervisor Don Rogers, a member of the Michigan Township Association Board of Directors said “The township is not responsible for maintenance of local roads. The township is not responsible for roads, period.” This includes any liability for local roads.
