First Sounds Vol. 5.
First Sounds Vol. 5 launches another set of tracks with an incredible diversity of sounds produced in various locations and languages. Vol. 5 features artists from Lutruwita (Tasmania), Kaurna (Adelaide), Meanjin (Brisbane) to Tamworth (Gomeroi), the Torres Strait Islands and stretching to Noongar plains (Perth). This compilation continues the pioneering of our First Nations music. From soul hip-hop to saltwater reggae, atmospheric electronica, Naaguja traditional dance songs and truth-telling punk rock.
In selecting the final artists, tracks were listened to by a rotating panel of First Nations music industry leaders. Emily Wurramara, Dallas Woods, Alice Skye and Shellie Morris are just some that have participated in the curation to deliver a strong vision of First Nations music today.

But today’s might just pip them all at the post. Naarm/Melbourne artist Alice Skye dropped by the triple j studios this week for her run at the famous segment, choosing to cover Cub Sport’s pop heartbreaker ‘Come On Mess Me Up’. She doesn’t mess with the original arrangement too much, and her vocals are more than capable of holding Tim Nelson’s sweeping melody. It’s completely goosebump-inducing.
“These lyrics are so devastating and beautiful,” Skye said in the accompanying interview. “I feel like it just tells a story. ‘
The line-up for the 2021 National Indigenous Music Awards has been revealed. Baker Boy, Miiesha, Electric Fields, King Stingray, Dallas Woods and Kee’Ahn and Alice Skye with more acts to be announced soon.

After its successful 2020 launch, The Push and APRA AMCOS’ Song Writing Sessions program is set to return.
Helping young, emerging songwriters develop their skills and find their voice, The Push and APRA AMCOS have announced the return of their free online coaching program, Song Writing Sessions.
Taking place across three weeks in June, the program will partner successful applicants with artist mentors to workshop an original track.

Triple j’s Like A Version has been on something of a hot streak at the moment.
