Kids in Motion ready for new year, growth

HANNIBAL — Kids in Motion is heading into 2021 with a characteristic Douglass Community Services Youth Services Director Jared Moore has seen in abundance — resilience. “We serve students who have had to be resilient in life, who have faced difficult situations they’ve had to bounce back from already,” Moore said. “That skill of resilience is something that I feel like Kids in Motion does a great job with.” KIM, a program of Douglass Community Services and supported by funding from United Way, adapted its traditional eight-week summer work program to an online format for 2020 due to the pandemic. Moore said kids were eager and ready for the changes, performing service projects including cleaning up the hiking trails at Hannibal-LaGrange University and making Christmas cards for residents at Country View Nursing Facility. Members are gathering at First Presbyterian Church for after-school programs, and volunteers are being sought.

The utility company handed out free energy kits through a mobile drive-thru event at Douglass Community Center. J.T. Young, president and CEO of MLGW says this act of service is about helping customers become more energy efficient. “We want to make sure that customers understand how important it is to do what they can to save energy,” said Young. “We want to do what we can to help relieve the energy burden with our customers, and this is just a small way that we can do that to help customers.”

Christmas Blessings program assists families with necessities

STAFF REPORT HANNIBAL — In its first year, the Christmas Blessings program at Douglass Community Services provided assistance for needed items to 104 individuals in 39 families. Assistance provided by local donors include household and clothing items, as well as transportation and utility assistance. Highlights included providing reliable transportation for a family, donating 11 beds and three household appliances and assisting a family with medical travel. “The Christmas Blessings Program recognized that many families have needs beyond toys,” said Stacey Nicholas, director of Community Outreach Initiatives. “All children in the program received toys through Toys for Tots of Northeast Missouri. Christmas Blessings gave items that provided for family stabilization.”
