NEW DELHI: Infighting in the state Congress units, mistakes in candidate selection and the choice of alliances were behind the Congress’ defeat in the recently-held Assembly elections in five states, according to a report by a panel constituted by party chief Sonia Gandhi.
The panel, whose members included former Maharashtra CM Ashok Chavan, Salman Khurshid, Manish Tewari, Vincent Pala and Jothi Mani, submitted its report to Sonia. The report said factionalism or infighting was present in all the states that went to polls, and it has caused the party dearly.

A five-member Congress panel on Tuesday submitted its assessment on the party s losses in the just-concluded assembly elections to party chief Sonia Gandhi, and put forward several recommendations and suggestions to strengthen the organisation.
Former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan who heads the group said he had submitted the report on the party s performance in Kerala, Assam and Puducherry and that the assessment for West Bengal was underway. We have submitted our report on poll losses in Assam, Puducherry and Kerala and have given our suggestions and recommendations, Chavan told PTI.
