Potholes show up fairly suddenly toward the end of every winter season, but this year was especially quick, Gano said. February brought 11 days of subzero temperatures the most since 1958, according to the National Weather Service but finished with highs in the mid-40s.
As the city logs reports, public works crews are out in full force and usually respond to a report within 48 hours, the city said in a news release. They patch the holes with cold mix asphalt, which holds for a few days or a few weeks at best, as a stopgap until warm temperatures stick and allow for hot asphalt to be poured, Gano said.

(Des Moines, Iowa) Pothole season is starting in Iowa. We re at that time of year when they start showing up. When you have a deep freeze like we just came through, and then a quick warm up, that will cause the first wave of potholes to show up. Des Moines Public Works Director Jonathan Gano tells WHO Radio News.
His crews patch potholes year-round on 750 miles of the city s busiest roads. We run pothole patching crews on the snow route system, that s the roads everyone uses to get around. Gano says.
