Dalziel said keeping rates increase below 5 per cent was not possible for several other councils. “I know some people think we have not managed to get that down far enough. Others say the balance is about right.” Auckland Council is proposing a 5 per cent increase, while Dunedin has proposed a 9.8 per cent increase.

Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel says the budget strikes the right balance. MacDonald said comparing the council’s rate increase to others was not a great benchmark because they were out of control too. His goal was to minimise the additional cost to ratepayers, and he did not think the council had achieved that.
