The Christchurch City Council is considering changing its central city parking policy. It says there is a perception the city lacks parking, but is asking if that is really the case or a myth. (First published August 2020) The council s crackdown on unconsented car parks has the chair of the Central City Business Association, Annabel Turley, worried. Fewer car parks would give people an excuse not to come into the city, she said.

Keown said the request was not rude because it was the council’s responsibility to comment on rates. “A 24 per cent increase should alarm anyone and as a council it is our job to speak up.” MacDonald said there had been a public backlash over the fact ECan was “not prepared to drive greater efficiencies” and the city council should be sending some sort of direction to ECan on behalf of ratepayers. “I don t think it’s unreasonable to put something like this to them. They can reject it. We don’t listen to every submission that comes through, we probably don’t listen to most of them.”

Cannabis company Medical Kiwi - the subject of ongoing inquiries by the financial markets regulator - has been denied a listing on the NZX. NZ RegCo chief executive, Joost van Amelsfort, responsible for NZX regulation, confirmed the stock exchange has declined Medical Kiwi s application and determined the company is not suitable for a direct listing at this time.
A Financial Markets Authority (FMA) spokesman said its investigations into the company are ongoing.
Medical Kiwi s chairman and executive director, Aldo Miccio, rejected the characterisation that his firm s application has been declined.
The rules governing which retailers can and cannot open vary from district to district, and are also different on Good Friday and Easter Monday. Oderings has flouted the laws for a number of years and most years each of its stores are fined the maximum $1000 for doing so but director Julian Odering is unapologetic for the chain’s stance. “Our customers want us to open.”

He said garden centres were allowed to trade over Easter Weekend before law changes were made without consultation in the 1990s. Garden centres can now legally open on Easter Sunday but Good Friday is still a no-go area.
