ALTON, Ill. The Alton Branch NAACP is holding a Martin Luther King Jr. Motorcade Celebration this Sunday, January 17.
This is the first year for the event, and the theme is
Making Lives Matter, Where Do We Go From Here, which acknowledges the work we have yet to do.
The motorcade is in celebration of the example set by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the hope he instilled in our community that change will come.

ALTON The Alton Branch NAACP is planning its first ever motorcade to celebrate the memory and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Jan. 17.
The event’s theme, “Making Lives Matter, Where Do We Go from Here,” acknowledges the work yet to be done. The NAACP asks that motorcade participants meet at the Lincoln-Douglas Square in downtown Alton by 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17, to ensure a prompt 2 p.m. departure to James Killion (Salu) Park. People are invited to use creative decor on their vehicles.
Upon arrival at the park, there will be a wreath-laying in honor of Dr. King and brief remarks to commemorate the moment.
Special permit approved for medical marijuana dispensary

The Zoning Board of Appeals, on a 4-0 vote, has approved a special permit for 449 Rt. 130, site for the proposed In Good Health, medical marijuana dispensary.
In Good Health has pledged to give 3% of its net revenues to the town (via a host agreement), plus support local nonprofits. Most of the conversation centered on traffic and parking during the Zoom meeting tTuesday. Members Christopher R Neeven and James Killion recused themselves from the deliberation and vote.
Alternate members Gerry Nye and Jack Casali were brought up to serve on the hearing. Attorney Kevin Kirrane represented In Good Health. Their CEO & President, Dave Noble, also participated, as did their traffic engineer, Andrew Arsenault of VIA.Representing the town was building Inspector Brendon Brides, town planner Ralph Vitacco, Assistant Town Engineer Sam Jensen, and Assistant Planning Director & Special Projects Administrator Leanne Drake.
