LYNCHBURG, Va. – A community is taking a look back a year after the murder of George Floyd.
During the social unrest, people rioted in Lynchburg and protested for several days. Floyd’s death sparked an outcry for change that echoed in streets across America and right here at home.
“It was a day that opened a lot of eyes,” One Community, One Voice Director James Camm says. “It was a day that made people stop, look and ask, ‘Are we doing everything right? Can we change some things?’ It paved a great road to where we are going now.”

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Dozens of Lynchburg residents fed up with the violence in the city came together in a plea for peace Sunday night.
A vigil on the corner of 12th and Kemper streets remembered three recent homicide victims in the Hill City. Most notably, it eulogized 28-year-old mother Samantha Robinson, who was shot and killed when a stray bullet hit her while driving last week.
“We just can’t be quiet. We’ve got to take action,” said James Camm of One Community One Voice, who organized the vigil. “There’s a child without a mother. There’s a family that’s grieving without understanding.”
Lynchburgâs heroes were able to help several children fill their shopping carts with things they needed â and wanted â this holiday season.
During the fourth annual Shop with a Community Hero, an event put on by local nonprofit One Community, One Voice, 11 children from low-income neighborhoods were paired up with firefighters, first responders, health care workers and other âcommunity heroesâ who helped them shop at Walmart on Old Forest Road on Saturday morning.
Thanks to a partnership between One Community, One Voice and Walmart, each child was able to shop for $100 worth of gifts for themselves and their families. Slowly but surely, the children filled their carts with clothes, toys, games and gifts with their heroes by their sides.
