Mt Kenya s Kisumu Ndogo: Luos taught Kambas, Mbeeres how to fish

May 10th 2021 at 11:00:00 GMT +0300 Ordinarily, many Kenyans associate fishing with communities living along the Indian Ocean coast, Lake Turkana and the smaller Rift Valley lakes of Baringo and Naivasha, in addition to other minor lakes and rivers. And off all fishing communities in the country, the Luo form the majority. What many would not know are the great lengths they took in pursuit of fishing that they are today to be found in remote areas such as Kiamburu dam on the border of Embu and Machakos counties. The settlement of the Luo came forth to Kisumu Ndogo, a cosmopolitan beach settlement on the dam’s shores, where they have harmoniously co-existed with other communities from Western Kenya and Mt Kenya regions for decades.

[Xinhua] It is 6 am, and James Ochieng’ wades the Lake Victoria water. He is returning home from work, but with nothing to show for braving the cold and waves all night. Ochieng’ is not new to this trade. He has been a fisherman for 20 years. But clearly, with every passing year, the catch is dwindling. Now he wonders if he should try another occupation. When he began fishing in 2002, Ochieng’ could net 400kg of Tilapia in a day, and from that earn Sh200,000. Today he says the maximum he can get from a day’s catch is Sh10,000. Sometimes he returns home empty handed.

[Kipsang Joseph, Standard] Nakuru County Governor Lee Kinyanjui has appointed a new Chief Officer to the Health Department to fill the void left by the demise of Mr Samuel King ori. King ori succumbed to Covid-19 on March 22, 2021. Governor Kinyanjui Thursday appointed Dr Daniel Wainaina Ndung u to the office in an acting capacity. This is to inform the public that Dr Daniel Wainaina Ndung u has been appointed acting chief officer for Public Health effective immediately, said Kinyanjui in a statement. Prior to the appointment, Dr Wainaina, who holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree and a Masters in Public Health, served as the county’s Deputy County Director of Medical Services.
