Solar power bill heads to Governor DeWine s desk Alexa Helwig, WKRC © Provided by WKRC Cincinnati HIGHLAND COUNTY, Ohio (WKRC) – Ohio counties could soon have control over the development of large-scale solar and wind farms. A bill that gives commissioners the ability to create restrictions is waiting to be signed by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. Cincinnati recently broke ground on the nation s largest city-led solar project. 1,000 acres of solar arrays will go up in Highland County, but local Dave Gingerich said it’s not the only project in the works. “Within just a small radius of our town, we are being surrounded with 7,000 to 8,000 acres of solar arrays. When they put those up, there are no laws that are set up to specify what is called a setback,” he said.

On March 29, the Biden administration announced a comprehensive plan to jumpstart offshore wind energy projects along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, as well as in the Gulf of Mexico. Details of the plan include accelerating the permitting of oceanic wind projects and investing in the infrastructure, research and development necessary for construction and maintenance of the projects. Through this plan, the administration hopes to provide enough clean energy to power 10 million homes yearly, avoid 78 million metric tons of CO2 emissions, and create around 77,000 jobs by 2033.  “Offshore wind is such a large resource, such a well-placed resource in terms of being near big population centers that will need a lot of energy, and such a reliable resource,” said Emma Searson, director of Environment America’s 100% renewable campaign. “I think it will play a really big role in k

FILE Five new Amtrak routes in Ohio would mean more options from Cincinnati to Cleveland and several points between, and it could attract new jobs and improve the environment, officials said. The company’s proposal on more rail travel in Ohio includes routes connecting Cincinnati with Cleveland, Indianapolis, Chicago, Pittsburgh, New York and several other cities.
