MINNEAPOLIS Baseball’s speed-up-the-game rule that starts each extra inning with a runner on second base has not been user-friendly for the Minnesota Twins.
The 10th has been nothing but trouble, this time caused by the Seattle Mariners.
Mitch Haniger homered and hit the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, giving the Mariners a 4-3 victory over the Twins on Saturday.

MINNEAPOLIS Mitch Haniger homered and hit the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, giving the Seattle Mariners a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday.
All three of Minnesota’s losses this season have come in the 10th, with the bullpen struggling with baseball’s new-as-of-2020 rule that starts each extra inning with a runner on second base.
For Seattle, that was Taylor Trammell, who homered earlier in the game.

The Twins have only dropped three ballgames this spring, but they’ve all come home, road, or otherwise in ten innings.
Today was no exception; after avoiding a shutdown inning every time the Mariners took the lead, Minnesota failed to score their 10th-inning runner after Seattle did so in the top half. Keynan Middleton induced some weak contact for a quick pair of outs, and Byron Buxton was beat at first by a sharply-hit grounder to end the game.
This came after a 10th inning in which the visiting Mariners advanced their ghost runner with a bunt single, before Taylor Rogers recorded three straight outs. One of them was a sacrifice fly as a result, Seattle trotted home the winning run of the game.
