Photos: Inside New Albany High School s SMOKEY JOE S CAFE

Through the hit songs of writers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, Smokey Joe's Cafe tells the story of American rock and roll's Golden Age. The duo's iconic tracks including 'Hound Dog,' 'Jailhouse Rock,' 'Love Potion #9,' and 'Stand By Me,' among many others form the basis for the characters' journey in the show, as they grow from high schoolers in the 1950s to adulthood in the 1960s. Their journey is that of our nation, as it took a step toward equality with the passage of the Civil Rights and Voting Acts of 1964 and 1965. The 1960s were a tumultuous period in American history, as the United States fought an increasingly unpopular foreign war in Vietnam and groups that had been historically oppressed sought equal rights and opportunities. Two casts of 14, 28 performers in total, took the stage at the McCoy Center for the Arts from April 8th - April 11th. For more information visit: https://www.napls.us/Page/4174

But you’ll almost certainly have heard one of their songs. Last week, these songwriters – whose pop star clients and collaborators include Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, Harry Styles and plenty more – broke cover to publish an open letter that’s since been signed, the group says, by more than a thousand other writers. The group is operating under the name ‘The Pact’, and the terms are simple: they’re not going to give songwriting credit to artists who haven’t made a contribution to the writing process.

Mar 11, 2021 The Olney Central College Theater was just a week away from presenting Mamma Mia last spring when the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown not only its performances, but shows across the country.   “I feel so sorry that our audience didn’t get to see all the hard work the Mamma Mia cast put in,” said OCC Theater Director Jon Wright. “That will be the first production we do once everything returns to normal and we are able to do our shows with a normal size cast.” In the meantime, Wright is excited to bring Smokey Joe’s Café to the Ruth Henry Stage.

She championed the history of American art, and her first book, American Art since 1900: A Critical History (1967) was published in fourteen languages. In the 1960s and 70s her “ABC Art”, published in Art in America in October 1965, was recognised as a pivotal text; comparing the ideas of Kasimir Malevich and Marcel Duchamp, she examined the evolution of those American artists who were soon to be labelled Minimalists – among them Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, Frank Stella, Richard Tuttle and Andy Warhol.
