In 1st Judicial District Court, felony drug possession makes up about a third of all court cases. District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies Between people cycling in and out of the court system, and the judicial resources needed to prosecute these crimes, 1st Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies knew she needed to do something differently. “I come from a criminal defense background, and what I saw working when I was a criminal defense attorney was when people … got offered help,” she said. “Whether that’s treatment or whether … they have to go to a community service.”

City Police Awarded Half of Request for Body Armor Buys

 The City of Española Public Safety Committee during its Jan. 6 meeting moved for the full city council to accept a $10,789.20 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to reimburse the police department for body armor purchases in 2020.     Police Chief Roger Jimenez spoke about the armor during the meeting.     “We had the opportunity to apply for, I believe it was approximately $21,000 for bulletproof vest funds, and we were accepted and granted $10,789.20. We’ve been pretty aggressive seeking grants and this is one of them,” Jimenez said. “I wanted to give kudos to Lieutenant Richard Trujillo, we tasked him with getting this and he was able to get it done for us.”
