There has been for some time a long, drawn-out debate about freedom of speech and expression in our democracy.
Article 19 (1)(a) of the Constitution of India guarantees this right to all Indians. It states that all citizens shall have the right to free speech and expression. However in Article 19 (2) the term âreasonable restrictionsâ comes to the fore. The right in (1)(a) bestowed on Indian citizens (by all means a human right) is subject to âreasonable restrictionsâ. Hence all Indians are promised by their own constitution the right to voice how they feel on issues that they want to talk about â in conversation, in the written word, in the press, in movies, etc.
