ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) A growing number of state lawmakers want answers from the New York State Department of Labor about the massive problem of unemployment fraud, it’s an issue News10NBC has been exposing for months.
Now, a delegation of Republican Senators is calling for a forensic audit of the NYS Department of Labor’s IT systems and an accurate assessment of potential fraud, particularly as the state’s Unemployment Insurance fund is facing a $10 billion deficit which has led to dramatic increases in costs to small businesses.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) The New York State Department of Labor is patting itself on the back for stopping 1.1 million fraudulent unemployment claims worth $12.3 billion but what it won’t say, despite several requests from News10NBC, is how many claims it didn’t stop, how many millions or billions went out the door to scammers.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo held a press briefing in Buffalo on Thursday, so News10NBC Investigative Reporter Jennifer Lewke traveled there to ask him about unemployment fraud and how it’s now impacting businesses across the state who are seeing huge increases in their unemployment insurance premiums to replenish a depleted fund.

News10NBC updated this story to correct the fact that the Pfizer vaccine is currently the only COVID-19 vaccine given emergency use authorization for people 16 and older.
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WHEC) Gov. Andrew Cuomo recommended Thursday high schools help get their students vaccinated.
During his COVID-19 briefing in Buffalo, Cuomo said the state is focused on getting the shot to more people ages 16-25. School is still in session, a high school should organize where they will take their students, 16+ to a vaccination site, put em on a bus, Cuomo said.
New York state recently opened the vaccine to people 16 and up in early April, but Cuomo says the turnout needs to improve. He says he believes younger people may be either hesitant or believe they won t get serious symptoms.
