Thousands of Bay Area renters who have fallen behind on payments during the pandemic could soon see that debt reduced, thanks to $2.6 billion in new rent relief funding announced Monday by Gov. Gavin Newsom.
But that’s only if they and their landlords can navigate a confusing patchwork of state and local programs that advocates say are already leading to people falling through the cracks.
With rent relief once again wrapped up in the state’s contentious annual budget process, they expect more clashes over income limits for debt forgiveness, whether to pay the money to landlords or tenants, and how to address closely related issues like eviction protections and forgiveness for other kinds of pandemic-induced debt.

According to court documents, police say the suspect was driving a stolen car and while trying to evade capture, he crashed into Officer Farrar, then kept driving. Even as several officers opened fire on the suspect, he continued to accelerate in their direction.
Police: Man to face murder, other charges in Chandler officerâs death

GILBERT, Ariz. - A man arrested in the death of one Arizona police officer and serious injury of another after they were struck by a stolen vehicle will face charges of murder and other crimes, police said.
Jonathan Altland, 25, was transported to a hospital for unspecified injuries after being taken into custody late Thursday night at a Gilbert auto dealership where Chandler police Officer Christopher Farrar was fatally injured and Gilbert police Officer Rico Aranda suffered a head injury, the Gilbert Police Department said Friday night in a statement.
