The idea has long been a refrain for both proponents and critics of extra-innings baseball, though often voiced with tongue in cheek: instead of drawing out contests to 10 or 12 or 17 wearying innings, or starting each extra frame with a runner on second base, why not just settle the matter via a home run derby? This year, as the affiliated minor and independent leagues implement a variety of experimental rules, the Pioneer League will do just that. The “Knock Out” rule, as the league is calling it, is just one change from among a slate that should garner the league some attention though that doesn’t mean it’s coming to major league ballparks anytime soon.

ARLINGTON, Texas After taking three of four games from the defending American League champion Tampa Bay Rays, the Texas Rangers came home with a thud.
Texas dropped the first of a three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 5-2, dropping them to 6-8 on the season. At first, it looked like the Rangers were about to see a repeat of last Friday when Joe Musgrove threw a no-hitter against them.
The team got home late from their four-game series in Tampa Bay last night, but that isn t an excuse for Chris Woodward s team. I m not going to make excuses for our guys. We ve gotta be better, Woodward said. That s professional baseball. You re going to have to deal with stuff like that. I felt like that guy came at us and attacked us. We just didn t attack back. A lot of called third strikes. A lot of chase at the top of the zone. We didn t really have tough at-bats tonight.

The 2021 MLB season begins today! Here at Athletics Nation we follow the A’s offseason moves closely, but they’re not the only team out there making trades and signing free agents. There are four other clubs competing for the AL West division crown, so let’s take a look at what they did over the winter.
In the transaction tables, free agent contracts are rounded to the nearest million. Players who re-signed with incumbent teams are not listed because they didn’t move anywhere (like Mike Fiers and Yusmeiro Petit). In the “Hello” columns, only players on the expected Opening Day rosters are mentioned. In the “Goodbye” columns, free agents who don’t have a team listed next to them remain unsigned.
