How much is a clam worth to a coastal community?

E-Mail Researchers have developed a method to estimate the value of oyster and clam aquaculture to nitrogen reduction in a coastal community. Nitrogen is a nutrient that comes from many different sources, including agriculture, fertilizers, septic systems, and treated wastewater. In excess it fuels algal growth, which can affect water quality and human health. As a result, a growing number of communities are required to follow regulations to reduce the amount of nitrogen they release. Shellfish are an option that can be a valuable part of a community s nutrient management plan. In a study in Environmental Science & Technology, shellfish biologists, economists, and modelers from NOAA Fisheries, NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, and Stony Brook University used a transferable replacement cost methodology to estimate the value of oyster and clam aquaculture to nitrogen reduction in Greenwich, Connecticut.

The son of Chinese immigrants, he graduated from MIT at 21 with a Master’s, worked successfully at the world’s largest hedge fund, married the love of his life, moved to the suburbs and started a family. Then, like most of us, Yang learned that life almost never goes exactly how you planned. He and his wife Christine soon found themselves parents to triplets born at 24 weeks, together weighing less than half of your average full-term 7.5-pound baby. Within a week, they had lost one child, a son, Raymond, and found themselves in the fight of their lives to help their surviving son and daughter, Daniel and Sofia a fight that, in their daughter’s case, would take

Cloud-based farm accounting solution launched by ag tech start-up Traction

By 1/14/2021 In order to manage financial information and overall farm profitability, farmers have had to choose between non-farm-specific applications or legacy desktop software. This presented two challenges. Not only was it difficult to integrate accounting to field-level analysis, using older software that wasn’t always supported made it tough to maintain. The founders of Traction want to give farmers a better option. The platform captures all of a farmer’s financial and field information to provide an accurate view of operational performance using cutting-edge technology that is intuitive and expandable in the future. The ag tech start-up’s first cloud-based farm accounting application, Basic Accounting, enables farmers to manage their day-to-day cash accounting transactions from any connected device.
