Brush fire breaks out in Riverside County s Jurupa Valley

Print A brush fire ignited Thursday afternoon in Riverside County, spreading across 30 acres in two hours and prompting authorities to order some residents to evacuate. The blaze, dubbed the Jurupa fire, was reported at 2:16 p.m. near Van Buren Boulevard and Jurupa Road in Jurupa Valley, a city in northwestern Riverside County. The fire was initially burning a quarter of an acre in a wash-type area, said April Newman, a public information officer for the Riverside County Fire Department. By 4 p.m., the fire had grown to about 30 acres, burning grass, weeds and other dry vegetation in the wash, Newman said.

Cal Fire and the Riverside County Fire Department responded to a call of a fire near Van Buren Boulevard and Jurupa Road in Jurupa Valley around 2 p.m.  Crews have contained about 40% of the fire, which covered about 30 acres. Multiple engine and hand crews from the county, Corona and Riverside fire departments, as well as Murrieta Fire & Rescue, were sent to the location and encountered flames moving at a moderate rate through heavy vegetation. The fire jumped Van Buren from west to east, approaching transient camps and houses along Pedley Road. With the help of two Cal Fire water-dropping helicopters, crews stopped the fire s forward rate of spread about 5 p.m.

Board of Supervisors is ready to approve a $64.79 million contract with an engineering company for construction of a railroad grade separation in Jurupa Valley. Granite Construction Inc. won the bid for the Jurupa Road/Union Pacific Railroad Separation Project. Granite was one of five contractors vying for the job. “The project will eliminate at-grade crossing at the UPRR line located on Jurupa Road to provide uninterrupted and efficient access for motorists, residents, businesses, pedestrians, and emergency vehicles in the area,” Riverside County’s Transportation & Land Management Agency said in a statement.
