Researchers rush to understand kelp forests as harvesting increases

Researchers rush to understand kelp forests as harvesting increases A growing seaweed industry based on the production of alginate, a thickener used in the food, textiles and pharmaceutical industries, has driven a boom in harvesting of kelp off the coasts of Chile and Peru. At the same time, researchers are warning that kelp remains relatively understudied, and that large-scale harvesting of kelp forests could have significant ecosystem impacts. To fill this information gap and push for sustainable management of this resource, scientists are carrying out important research, but have been stymied by the COVID-19 pandemic. The kelp forests of the oceans are a habitat for a wide range of marine species, rivaling even the great tropical forests for sheer richness of biodiversity, according to scientists from the KELPER project, which studies these marine algae ecosystems.

Groundbreaking global study is first to map ocean areas that, if strongly protected, would help solve climate

Date Time Share Groundbreaking global study is first to map ocean areas that, if strongly protected, would help solve climate Groundbreaking global study is the first to map ocean areas that, if strongly protected, would help solve climate, food and biodiversity crises By Harrison Tasoff Santa Barbara, CA From climate change and carbon emissions to biodiversity and global hunger, humanity faces so many challenges that tackling them quickly is a daunting task. One solution that potentially addresses multiple issues could provide the impetus society needs to make significant progress. An international team of 26 authors, including six at UC Santa Barbara, has just published a study in the prestigious journal Nature offering a combined solution to several of humanity’s most pressing challenges. It is the most comprehensive assessment to date of where strict ocean protection can contribute to a more abundant supply of healthy seafood and provide a cheap, natural solution to add

Satellite data identifies companies fishing in high seas

E-Mail A team of researchers, using satellite data and other analytical tools, has identified companies fishing in high seas waters that lie outside of national jurisdiction where fishing has raised fears about environmental and labor violations. The study, which appears in the journal One Earth, is the first to link companies to fishing activity in these largely unregulated areas. There is a lot of concern about companies that operate on the high seas, simply because there they are beyond the reach of any nation s laws and regulations, says Jennifer Jacquet, an associate professor in NYU s Department of Environmental Studies and lead author of the peer-reviewed study. By connecting those boats with specific companies, this study takes a first step in enhancing transparency we now know a lot more about who is profiting from fish catches in the global commons.
