SURAT: Seven trustees of Bombay Patel Welfare Society were arrested by Bharuch police on Saturday in connection with the fire at Welfare Hospital. Earlier, two other trustees were nabbed on May 15. The arrested trustees include office-bearers.
Although the FIR registered by cops on May 12 had named only president Dr Khalid Patel as accused, others too were held responsible for the mishap that claimed 18 lives on May 1. Besides Khalid, vice-president Faruk Ibrahim Patel, general secretary Zuber Patel, treasurer Salim Patel, Ahmed Ruwala, Faruk Abdullah Patel, Habib Patel, Mohammed Faruq Patel and Suhel Dalal have been made accused.
Surat: After the massive fire ravaged the entire facility on the midnight of April 30, the Welfare Hospital administration in Bharuch announced it will not treat Covid patients any more.
The hospital administration said that the infrastructure they had created was damaged and there is nothing much they can do now. “We have cured hundreds of patients from not only Bharuch, but from Vadodara, Surat and Narmada for free in one year. We have also lost our Covid treatment centre and all medical infrastructure so we will not be able to continue the treatment,” said Zuber Patel, trustee of Bombay Patel Welfare Society.

Massive fire at hospital in Gujarat s Bharuch
At least 18 coronavirus patients died after a fire broke out at a hospital in Gujarat s Bharuch in the early hours on Saturday. Gut-wrenching visuals of the tragedy showed remains of some patients roasted alive on stretchers and beds. There were around 50 other patients at the four- storeyed Welfare Hospital when the fire broke out in the COVID-19 ward at 1 am. They were rescued by locals and firefighters, an official said. As per information at 6.30 am, the death toll in the tragedy stood at 18. Immediately after the fire, we had confirmation of 12 deaths, a police official said.
