Focusing on lutein and its potential cognitive effects

Focusing on lutein and its potential cognitive effects By Stephen Daniells Recent research reinforces the potential cognitive benefits of lutein, with the carotenoid linked to better brain health throughout the lifespan. Lutein is well-established as an eye health ingredient, given that it and zeaxanthin are concentrated in the macula.   The macula is a yellow spot of about five millimeters diameter on the retina (lutein and zeaxanthin are the source of the yellow color). As we age, levels of the pigments in the macula decrease naturally, thereby increasing the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The link between lutein and eye health was first reported in 1994 by Dr Johanna Seddon and her co-workers at Harvard University, who found a link between the intake of carotenoid-rich food, particularly dark green leafy vegetables like spinach, and a significant reduction in age-related macular degener

Biomarker Discovery Could Aid Development of Senolytic Drugs Against Age-Related Disorders

Biomarker Discovery Could Aid Development of Senolytic Drugs Against Age-Related Disorders April 5, 2021 Share Buck Institute researchers have discovered a novel biomarker, detectable in blood and urine, which could form the basis of a noninvasive test to measure and track the performance of senolytics, a class of drugs that selectively eliminate senescent cells. The oxylipin biomarker, 15-deoxy-delta-12, 14-prostaglandin J2 (dihomo-15d-PGJ2), is a signaling lipid metabolite oxylipin molecule that normally accumulates inside cells, but is released when senescent cells die, and can be detected in urine and blood. The results of the team’s newly reported studies in cultured cells and in mice could aid the development of senolytic drugs against a range of chronic age-related conditions, such as arthritis, lung disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and glaucoma. And with a growing list of such treatments in development, detecting the dihomo-15d-PGJ2 oxylipin via a companion diagnostic cou

NORTHEASTERN LOCAL SCHOOLS LOSING STAFF TO RETIREMENT

Mar 17, 2021 There will be plenty of interviewing going on in the Northeastern Local School District over the next few months, with close to 9 staff members retiring from the system so far. At their recent meeting, the Northeastern board accepted the retirements of teachers Jill Sautter and Jean Meyer, each with 24 years at Tinora Schools. And Denise Moore is retiring from the cafeteria staff after 43 years of service to the community. Work on the community auditorium is picking-up steam at Tinora Schools, with plumbing and underground work underway, along with masonry, and site utility tie-ins. The auditorium-administration project is still projected to be completed by next spring.
