Instead, state legislatures have acted to pass what s known as born-alive protection act bills to send to their governors, though it s mostly Republicans signing legislation. Kay Ivey signed into law nine bills today, including one that requires care for infants born alive during attempted abortions. HB237 by Rep. Ginny Shaver, R-Leesburg, says that if an infant is born alive after an attempted abortion, the doctor “shall exercise the same degree of professional skill, care, and diligence to preserve the life and health of the child as a reasonably diligent and conscientious physician would render to any other child born alive at any other location in this state at the same gestational age.”

The bill says a doctor who attempts an abortion must provide the same level of care for a child who survives an abortion as a doctor would for any other child at birth. Sen.
