The alliance fighting for restoration of special status of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday belatedly announced that the recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi was disappointing and said Assembly elections must be held only after statehood is restored.
The alliance has also decided to reach out to other parties who favour restoration of statehood and seek their support for evolving a common position which is that statehood should precede the elections.

The People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) expressed disappointment over the outcome of the meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month and reiterated that statehood should be restored to J&K before the conduct of assembly election.
PAGD spokesman Muhammad Yusuf Tarigami said on Monday that the grouping, in its meeting on the previous evening, had decided to reach out to other political parties as well to form a consensus on the conduct of elections only after the restoration of statehood.
Though the six-party grouping jointly lamented the absence of confidence-building measures on the part of the Centre in terms of ending “suppression” in the UT, they left it to individual parties to decide on whether or not to meet the Delimitation Commission. The commission has sent separate invitations to J&K outfits.
‘Discussing invitation with colleagues’
PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, when contacted, said she was discussing the commission’s invitation with her colleagues.
PAGD spokesperson and CPM leader MY Tarigami told The Tribune that his party would meet the commission both in Srinagar and Jammu. “The PAGD did not take a collective call on the commission’s invitations and decided that allies should decide individually,” Tarigami said, indicating a general willingness on the part of Gupkar members to join the delimitation process while continuing to seek full statehood before elections.
