San Diego acquired Mateo from the A’s last June. The former top prospect was out of minor league options, so the Padres had to keep him on the big league club (or injured list) in order to retain his long-term rights. The Friars have kept Mateo on the active roster over the past two seasons, although they’ve never seemed especially eager to give him regular playing time. The 26-year-old has tallied just 121 plate appearances over 79 games, serving mostly as a late-game pinch hitter, pinch runner or defensive replacement.

Alcides Escobar drove home Tres Barrera with a one-out single to center off Padres closer Mark Melancon with one out in the ninth Sunday afternoon to give the Washington Nationals an 8-7 win over visiting San Diego.
The Nationals salvaged a win in the finale of a three-game series marred by a Saturday night shooting incident outside Nationals Park.
Earlier Sunday, the Padres completed a 10-4 victory in the game that was suspended in the middle of the sixth in Saturday night due to the gunfire outside the ballpark.

For Martinez, the games were important, but his priority was the safety of his players, their families and the fans. The Washington manager welcomed fans seeking refuge into the team’s clubhouse as officials tried to restore order in the stadium after the shooting.
“They sweat just like the players do, just like I do,” Martinez said of the fans. “They’re here for us. … I just wanted to make sure that everybody was safe. It was a reactionary thing.”
When Martinez and the Nationals returned to the ballpark on Sunday, the manager said his goal, and the team’s, was to get back to a sense of normalcy.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit his second career grand slam to lead a four-homer barrage and the Toronto Blue Jays completed a doubleheader shutout sweep of the visiting Texas Rangers with a 10-0 victory Sunday afternoon at Buffalo, N.Y.
Randal Grichuk added a two-run home run and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.and George Springer each had solo shots for the Blue Jays who swept the three-game series.
The Blue Jays won the first game of the doubleheader 5-0, and took the season series between the teams 4-2.
