Manny Machado and Joe Musgrove led the way to a 5-4 San Diego win.
Machado put the Padres on the board in the first inning with a double to the gap in left-center that scored Trent Grisham for a 1-0 lead. San Diego pushed a couple more across in the 3rd inning because St. Louis starter Johan Oviedo couldn t find the strike zone with a GPS.
Oviedo started the inning walking Machado, Jake Cronenworth and Tommy Pham to load the bases with nobody out. Cardinals manager Mike Schildt brought in Jake Woodford, who gave up a sacrifice fly to Brian O Grady that plated Machado to make it 2-0. Woodford then hit Austin Nola with a pitch to load the bases and followed that with a brain cramp.
1. More production from Pham and Kim
Manager Jayce Tingler was quick to point out that the burden won t fall to any single player. And while there s some truth to that statement, the spate of roster moves will give two slumping Padres in particular a chance to take center stage: infielder Ha-Seong Kim and left fielder Tommy Pham.
Kim replaces Tatis as the team s primary shortstop, and Pham will receive regular starts in left with Myers and Profar sidelined. Pham and Kim have combined to post a dreadful .196 batting average this season (which is, after all, why they’d been resigned to bench duty in the first place).
COVID CONCERN
The virus-stricken Yankees are set to open a series in Baltimore a day after revealing shortstop Gleyber Torres tested positive for the coronavirus despite being fully vaccinated and having previously had COVID-19.
Torres is among eight so-called breakthrough positives among the Yankees â people who tested positive despite being fully vaccinated.
âCertainly unexpected,â Yankees manager Aaron Boone said of Torres. âObviously everyone, Major League Baseball, thatâs in charge of testing is looking into that. The variants that could be out there if that is the case.â
The Yankees also have three coaches and four traveling staffers who have tested positive. Boone said all eight are asymptomatic but continue to test positive.
