(WDAM) - The historic district of Laurel has seen a steady increase of visitors thanks to free walking tours offered by the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art. The tours showcase the elegant homes built in the early 1900s and feature various architectural styles, including Italianate renaissance, classic Greek and Mediterranean designs. Guided by museum director George Bassi, the rich history of Laurel comes alive as the stories about the families who built the homes are woven into the tour.

(WDAM) - If you’ve been to Laurel lately, you can’t help but feel the vibe and notice that the city is becoming quite the tourist destination thanks in part to the HGTV hit show, “Home Town.” The show features Ben and Erin Napier, residents who are passionate about where they live and restoring classic old homes inside the city. As a steady stream of visitors from across the country travel to Laurel to experience life in The City Beautiful, some of those tourists have also decided to plant roots here by purchasing homes of their own.

(WDAM) - The Lauren Rogers Museum of Art has opened a gallery featuring works by African American artists from around the country, Mississippi and the Pine Belt. “Identity and Response” is a collaborative between members of the staff at LRMA and local artist, Michael Ross, who is the curator for the exhibit. Ross was instrumental in placing each piece in a way which gives meaning and significance to those adjacent with each other. Artwork from Ross is included in the exhibit with the bulk coming from the permanent collection owned by the museum.

(WDAM) - 2021 will be a big year for exhibitions at the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art. Five different exhibits will be showcased in the coming months. One will have sculptures inspired by the history of the timber industry in Laurel. Another will have several works from African-American artists. A third will have contemporary Japanese woodblock prints and other exhibits will feature plaster sculptures and works from southern photographers. Museum director George Bassi says although the exhibition schedule will be busy, the museum is postponing many other activities, because of the coronavirus pandemic.
