THE world of archaeology has been alive this week with the news that a 5,000-year-old lost artefact from the Great Pyramid has been discovered in a cigar tin in a university collection. The fragment of cedar wood was discovered in a secret passage leading from the Queen’s Chamber in 1872 by engineer Waynman Dixon, a man with Cockfield in his blood who now rests in Great Ayton. Waynman placed the five-inch long piece of wood in the cigar tin with two other relics, a small stone ball and a bronze hook. The ball and the hook ended up in the British Museum, but the wood was presented in the tin to Aberdeen university in the 1940s after which it was lost – until this week .

Councillors in Downham have backed plans for a new Lidl store on the edge of the town, despite fears over its impact on the town centre and road safety.
The proposal to develop land off Bexwell Road was supported in a vote taken during a special town council meeting last night.
But members also called for a review of traffic arrangements for the scheme, with one even suggesting there could be dead bodies if alternative plans were not drawn up.
Town councillors have supported plans for a new Lidl on the edge of Downham, although they are worried about the proposed access.
The all-around performer, 52, opened up about how he and his family have been coping with the loss of Dixon, which Foxx said was “abrupt” and still very much an open wound for Foxx and his family as she was the “light” who largely kept the family close. Dixon was 36.
“You know what? We are getting along. Earlier, when it happened, it was so abrupt,” Foxx told “Extra” of the passing of Dixon, who was born with Down syndrome to parents Louise Annette Dixon and stepfather George Dixon in September 1984. “It was so much pain, man. My mother, my father, and my sister, they all live with me – it was so much pain.”
