Johnson City org hopes to attract curated shop downtown

The application, which is available at downtownjc.com/downtownnow, closes on Wednesday. The organization recently received a $50,000 Placemaking Grant from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development that will support business development in Johnson City. Most of the funding will be dedicated to placing a curated shop on the first floor of one of the large, unused buildings in the downtown core, which will involve having one business owner who subleases space to several smaller vendors. Subletters could include local artists, makers or other retailers. Dianna Cantler, Johnson City Development Authority interim executive director, said subleasing the space will take some of the burden off of the business owner, enabling them to fill a larger space.

Johnson City Chamber lists building for $495,000

Having called it home since its construction in 1978, the Johnson City/Jonesborough/Washington County Chamber of Commerce is now selling its building on East Market Street for $495,000. The building, at 603 E. Market St., was placed on the market on June 21. Chamber CEO Bob Cantler said he hopes the organization will move to its new home on the first floor of the Model Mill by the end of the year. Cantler said the Chamber is currently working with Thomas Weems Architects to get its new space move-in ready. The buildout could take three to four months. “It will be a state-of-the-art destination,” Cantler said.

Dog park grant is a win for Johnson City

An announcement last month perked up ears and got tails wagging all over Johnson City. The city won a $100,000 grant — the largest of 15 awarded in this round of funding — from the Boyd Foundation to help build a dog park downtown. The foundation is the namesake of Randy and Jenny Boyd, he a former state official, gubernatorial candidate, owner of a handful of the Appalachian League’s teams and current president of the University of Tennessee. Other communities in the area have received dog park funding from the foundation, including Erwin, which opened its park along the Linear Trail in March 2020, and Jonesborough, which is still searching for the right location for its park.

Consultant will review financing for proposed $28M Sevier Center replacement

With a firm submitting an almost $28 million proposal to build new housing for residents of the John Sevier Center, Johnson City officials are doing their due diligence before committing to the project, which would still be at least a few years down the line. The Johnson City Development Authority on Wednesday approved a contract with the National Development Council, a New York nonprofit, to review the financial model for the development plan. LHP Capital, a real estate development firm in Knoxville, submitted plans to construct about 145 units of housing for seniors and residents with disabilities. LHP also serves as the property management company for the John Sevier Center and took over day-to-day operations in April. The company would eventually own the new housing if it’s allowed to finance and build it.
