Inside the FBI: Combating Terrorism — FBI

Transcript  Steve Lewis:Previously on Inside the FBI, we looked back at the investigation that led to the arrest of Ted Kaczynski, better known as the Unabomber one of the nation’s most notorious domestic terrorists. When the FBI closed the UNABOM case in 1996, it didn’t tuck it away in a closet. The investigation taught us lessons that are still evident in today’s FBI. The UNABOM task force brought together personnel from counterintelligence and criminal investigations, a successful combination that helped inform the makeup of the FBI’s dedicated counterterrorism unit when it was created in 2000. The Unabomber also helped the FBI better understand the lone offender a threat that has continued to grow in the decades since his arrest.

Partnerships Are Key to Disrupting Violent Plots — FBI

With the Terror Threat Growing More Insular, Awareness and Reporting Are Crucial When acts of terrorism occur, the public sees the FBI respond and investigate alongside our partner agencies. What is less visible to the public is the intense, constant work the FBI is doing to prevent future attacks. “The more significant part of what the FBI does is get ahead of the attack with intelligence,” said Jill Sanborn, executive assistant director of the FBI’s National Security Branch. “The majority of the FBI’s work and really where we’ve grown since 9/11 as an intelligence organization is how we take the intelligence that we have and look for potential threats and then investigate those to disrupt them.”

Jewish father drowns on Sonoma coast trying to save two young children

UPDATED: Jan. 6, 12 p.m. A Jewish father is dead and his two young children presumed drowned after a sneaker wave, a surge that appears with tremendous force and no warning, dragged them into the ocean at a Sonoma County beach last weekend. The tragedy occurred on Sunday, Jan. 3, when Petaluma resident Michael Wyman, 40, his wife, Sarah, and their two children visited Blind Beach near Jenner along Sonoma’s rugged coastline. When the sudden rogue wave swept Anna, 7, and John, 4, out to sea, Wyman rushed in to save them. He was later pulled to shore but was pronounced dead at the scene. Despite ongoing aerial and underwater searches by the Sonoma County Sheriff and other agencies, the bodies of the children had not yet been recovered as of Wednesday.
