Oxford firefighters carry out rescue exercise in Castle Mill Stream

FIREFIGHTERS from an Oxford firestation entered the water for a training session over the weekend. Members of Oxfordshire Fire Services were carrying out a simulated water rescue in Castle Mill Stream by Oxford Castle. The rescue took place upstream against a torrent of white water from the weir, so that firefighters could learn how to best to save people falling into streams or rivers. Such incidents normally occur over the warmer months and are a particular concern to the service, which often appeals to the public to be careful when out in or beside rivers. The firefighters said the Mill Stream Weir was an ideal training spot and that the simulation will be carried out there approximately four times a year.

Canoe club spotted on Castle Mill Stream | thisisoxfordshire

WHILE ON his Sunday stroll, retired photographer John Welsby, spotted a group of canoeing enthusiasts enjoying the low water levels on Oxford s Castle Mill Stream. Mr Welsby, who lives on St Thomas Street near the stream’s edge, said he had seen the canoeists there on the ‘odd occasion’, and assumed it was dependent on the water levels. He said: “There were about nine or 10 canoes there, and it was a really nice day. “It was nice to see people out, there was a lot of colour on the stream, and everyone was having a good time, enjoying the stream which is basically an underused bit of water.
