LAKEVILLE Every day in gym class since freshman year, senior Mike Henricksen has looked up at the football banner at Apponequet and dedicated himself to helping add to it.
“We’ve been promising ourselves this since freshman year,” Henricksen of winning a conference title. “It’s the best feeling to finally make it happen. It’s a great feeling to have that 2021 on the banner.”
Henricksen was instrumental in the Lakers’ 42-7 victory over rival Old Rochester on Saturday night at Griffin Field to clinch Apponequet’s first conference title since 2014 with big plays on both sides of the ball.
“It was a little bit of everything, I can’t really explain it,” he said.
With his teammates yelling to him, ‘One more play,’ Dixon rose to his feet and got into his middle linebacker position.
“I just kept pushing myself,” Dixon said. “One more play is all we needed. I got their back and they got my back.”
Like it has done all season, Apponequet’s defense rose to the occasion on Saturday with a slew of tacklers, including Dixon, stopping D-R’s Aidan O’Connor on fourth down from the four as the Lakers pulled out a thrilling 21-13 double-overtime victory over the host Falcons in a matchup of South Coast Conference unbeaten teams at Taunton High.
Commissioners have given their consent to demolish the historic Marines Hall in Tītahi Bay. “We want something to recognise the Marines history but also the fond memories that our community have of the hall – this would be appropriate and a good result.” The hall was built by American soldiers in 1942 and used as a recreational facility. Since the 1970s it was home to the Porirua Little Theatre.
